What is oilcloth?
Oilcloth originates from the 18th century and was made by coating canvas or linen with boiled linseed oil to create a waterproof, durable fabric.
Modern oilcloth is usually 100% cotton fabric heat pressed with a vinyl (or PVC) coating.
However, the term 'oilcloth' is used by some companies as a broad term to describe wipe clean fabrics. But do not be fooled! PVC tablecloths are made from white vinyl printed with patterns or designs. The fabric is not coated to protect the print, and they fade over time.
How to measure and choose the right size
The width of our oilcloth is approx. 140cm.
Measure the length and width of your table in cms. We recommend you add 20-25cm each end to allow for overhang.
So, if your table measures 120 x 180cm, we recommend you choose the 2m length, as this gives you an equal overhang across the length and width of your table.
If you have a small table measuring 80 x 100cm, we recommend you purchase the 1m length. The overhang will not be equal, but it won’t be too noticeable, and if you’re not sure once it’s on your table, it can be cut easily with sharp scissors.
How to care for your oilcloth
Oilcloth is hard wearing, long lasting and resistant to most stains but will not withstand ball-pen ink, lipstick, nail varnish or shoe polish. Curry, tomato and newspaper print can also stain and leave marks.
We recommend that any spillages are wiped away immediately with a damp cloth and a little washing up liquid. Do not place dishes directly from the oven onto it.
It can be folded when not in use, but it's best to open and refold from time to time. Stubborn fold marks can be removed by ironing the reverse side with an cool iron.
